About Aperture Authority

Aperture Authority is a photography site built on three promises: camera fundamentals explained in plain English, gear recommendations you can trace to their sources, and shooting rules answered location by location with sources and verification dates. No mystery buttons, no mystery picks.

How we work

Gear picks compare manufacturer specifications, available owner and retailer feedback, current market context, and established expert coverage. The Aperture Score is an editorial summary, not a lab result or owner-review average. These are researched picks, not personally tested, and we label them that way. The full method is on how we research and rate. Rules pages link to their supporting sources and show the date we last verified them. None of it is legal advice.

Who is behind it

Aperture Authority uses a named byline for accountability and search clarity, not as a claim of lab testing or personal authority. Every guide, roundup, and rules page is the product of reading manufacturer specifications, checking available owner feedback, cross-checking expert publications and primary sources, then explaining the tradeoffs. The byline on each article points back here so you always know who is responsible for the recommendation.

The Authority Suite

Where Aperture fits

Aperture handles the photography side: settings, gear, shooting rules, shot planning, and image-making decisions. When the main question belongs to another specialty, the suite boundary should be clear.

How we make money

Some links are affiliate links: if you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes a score or a pick. See our full disclosure.

Start with the fundamentals, browse gear and genres, check the rules where you shoot, or plan a shoot with the Shot-List Generator.
