Rules change and enforcement varies. Confirm with the issuing authority before you shoot. Drone law depth lives at Drone Authority.

Permit

Conditional

Issuer: Detroit Film Office (Media Services Department)

Cost: The city issues a no-fee general permit; depending on the project, additional city permits or fees may apply, for example street closures

Processing: Submit a location use form, ideally about a month ahead

A general permit is required for film and photo work in the city. The film office requires proof of insurance naming the City of Detroit as additional insured for all projects; confirm current coverage limits with the office. Small handheld or personal photography not occupying public space is generally outside the permit.

Drone / airspace

Commercial drone work requires FAA Part 107; coordinate with the film office for operation over city property

Local rules sit on top of FAA airspace rules. For Part 107 and drone law, see Drone Authority.

Street / public space

Yes: you can photograph what is visible from public space in the US

Private property sets its own rules regardless of city law.

Practical notes

  • The general permit is free, but extra city permits and fees attach for street closures and special needs.
  • Allow about a month of lead time; insurance forms are required for all projects regardless of size.
