Why Does Log Footage Look Gray? Convert It Correctly

Log footage is flat and gray by design. Identify the exact profile, apply the correct input transform or LUT once, then correct exposure and color.

Log is not a codec and it is not a finished look. It is a tone and color mapping designed around post-production. Sony's S-Log guidance describes the lower-contrast image as part of a workflow that assumes grading, with gamma display assist or LUT monitoring used to preview normal contrast.

Convert Log in the right order

1. Identify the exact profile

"Log" is not specific enough. S-Log3, C-Log3, V-Log, F-Log2, D-Log M, N-Log, and other profiles use different curves and gamuts. Check the camera menu, clip metadata, or notes from the shoot. Guessing is how a normal flat file turns into odd color.

2. Set the project output

Decide whether the finished video is standard Rec.709 or an HDR format. Most web video is still delivered as Rec.709. The input conversion has to know where the footage starts and where the project ends.

3. Apply one technical conversion

Use the editor's color-management input transform or the manufacturer's matching technical LUT. Do not stack both unless the workflow specifically requires it. A technical conversion restores expected contrast and color mapping. A creative LUT adds a look. They are different jobs.

4. Correct exposure and white balance

After the technical transform, set black and white points, neutralize color casts, and keep skin or important product colors believable. Scopes are more reliable than a bright laptop screen. If highlights are clipped or shadows are deeply underexposed, no conversion can recreate data that was not recorded.

5. Add the look last

Only after the image is technically normal should you change palette, contrast character, saturation, or film emulation. This makes the grade easier to revise and prevents a creative LUT from hiding a bad input transform.

Display assist is not baked into the file

Many cameras can show a normal-looking preview while recording Log. That display assist or monitoring LUT helps with focus and exposure, but the recorded file remains flat. If the clip looks normal on the camera and gray in the editor, check whether the camera was showing an assist view.

The reverse can also happen: an editor recognizes the camera metadata and applies color management automatically. Adding a LUT on top can create crushed contrast and oversaturation. Turn nodes or effects off one at a time to find the duplicate transform.

Do not correct Log by saturation alone

Increasing saturation without restoring the correct tone curve leaves muddy shadows, weak midtone contrast, and unstable color. Raising contrast alone can clip highlights and crush black detail. Start with the correct profile conversion, then make small exposure and color corrections.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is using an S-Log3 LUT on S-Log2, or matching gamma while ignoring gamut. The next is double conversion. Another is shooting Log in a fragile 8-bit file and pushing it hard. Finally, underexposed Log often becomes noisy when normal contrast is restored. Log preserves choices; it does not replace correct exposure.
