Hunting is the lens moving past focus, reversing, and trying again. It does not automatically mean the lens is defective. Low light, low contrast, backlight, reflections, subject movement, and the wrong focus area can all remove the information the camera needs.
First, identify the failure

Fix autofocus in this order
1. Shrink the focus area
Wide-area autofocus may choose a lamp, window, or patterned background because it is easier than the subject. Select a small point or flexible spot and place it on an eye, eyebrow, collar edge, printed label, or another contrast boundary.
The edge should be at the same distance as the detail you want sharp. Focusing on a bright object behind the subject only gives the camera an easier way to miss.
2. Match the focus mode to movement
Use AF-S or One Shot for a subject that is still. Use AF-C or AI Servo when the subject moves toward or away from the camera. The autofocus modes guide explains the brand names and focus-area pairings.
3. Give the focus system more light
Open the lens aperture if the camera focuses at the selected aperture, remove a dark ND filter, or add a temporary constant light. For close subjects, the camera or flash AF-assist lamp may help. Turn the light off after focus if it would spoil the scene.
4. Aim for contrast, not brightness alone
A plain bright wall can be harder than a darker striped shirt. Phase- and contrast-detection systems need boundaries and texture. Sony's focus-subject guidance lists low light, backlight, shade, motion, and an initially defocused subject among the conditions that can make recognition and focus difficult.
5. Check distance and obstructions
Every lens has a minimum focus distance. Step back if the subject is too close. Glass, haze, mesh, branches, and reflections can also give autofocus a nearer surface to choose.
6. Use manual focus when the scene is stable
For a tripod, product, landscape, night scene, or static portrait, magnified manual focus is often faster than waiting for repeated hunting. Focus peaking can help locate edges, but magnification is more precise. Recheck after zooming or moving the camera.
Camera settings that do not solve it
Raising ISO brightens the recorded image, but it does not necessarily give the autofocus sensor more physical light. A faster shutter freezes motion after focus but does not make a dark, blank target easier to recognize. Burst mode records more attempts but cannot correct a bad focus target.
The useful changes are a better focus point, the correct AF mode, more actual light, a wider aperture, less obstruction, or manual focus.
Common mistakes
Do not keep the camera on wide-area auto in a scene with bright backgrounds. Do not use AF-S on someone walking toward the camera. Do not leave a strong ND filter on indoors. Do not stand closer than the lens can focus. Do not assume eye detection can recognize an eye that is tiny, shadowed, or turned away.

Why does my camera focus on the background in low light?
The background probably has more contrast or brighter edges than the subject, and a wide focus area is choosing it. Use a small focus point on a contrast edge at the subject's distance.
Does a faster lens help autofocus in the dark?
It can, because a wider maximum aperture can provide more light to the focus system. It will not fix the wrong focus mode, an overly wide focus area, a subject inside minimum focus distance, or a blank low-contrast target.
When should I stop using autofocus at night?
Switch to magnified manual focus when the subject is stationary and autofocus repeats the same hunt after you provide a clear contrast target. Tripod scenes, stars, architecture, and products are often faster to focus manually.
