Why Are the Corners of My Photos Dark? Fix Vignetting

Dark photo corners usually come from lens vignetting, a blocked lens hood or filter, or the wrong lens format. Use the shape to find the cause.

The shape matters more than the darkness. A gradual falloff belongs to the lens or a correction profile. A hard edge means something is physically blocking the frame.

Adobe defines vignetting as darker edges and corners caused by lens behavior that can vary with focal length, aperture, and focus distance. That gradual version is common at a lens's widest aperture, especially on wide-angle lenses.

Diagnose it in five frames

1. Photograph a plain surface

Use an evenly lit wall, overcast sky, or blank sheet of paper. Keep the exposure the same for every frame. Texture and busy backgrounds can hide the shape you are trying to identify.

2. Remove the hood, filters, and adapters

Take one clean frame with nothing attached to the filter thread. A thick polarizer, several stacked filters, a step-up ring, or a hood rotated out of position can enter the angle of view. This is especially common at the widest end of a zoom.

If the hard corners disappear, add one item back at a time. The first frame that brings them back identifies the obstruction. Do not buy a different lens before doing this test.

3. Compare wide open with stopped down

Take the same frame at the lens's widest aperture, then at f/4, f/5.6, and f/8 if the lens allows it. Keep brightness consistent by changing shutter speed or ISO.

Gradual corner falloff that improves as the aperture closes is optical vignetting. It is a lens characteristic, not a damaged sensor. If closing the aperture does nothing and the edge is hard, return to the hood, filter, adapter, and lens-format checks.

4. Check the lens correction state

Many cameras and raw editors have a correction profile for the exact lens. Sony calls its in-camera version Shading Compensation. Canon groups it under Peripheral Illumination Correction. Lightroom uses the lens metadata when Enable Lens Corrections is on.

Compare the raw file with correction on and off. A JPEG may already contain an in-camera correction, while the raw preview can change when the editor loads its own profile.

5. Confirm the lens covers the sensor

A lens designed for APS-C may not project an image large enough to cover a full-frame sensor. The result can be severe dark corners or a circular image. Use the camera's crop mode when supported, or use a lens built for the full sensor area. Editing cannot recreate the missing outer image.

What can be fixed in editing

Smooth optical falloff is usually easy to reduce with a lens profile or a manual vignette control. Watch the corners as they brighten. Strong correction can reveal noise because the edit is amplifying underexposed pixels.

Hard black blockage is different. Cropping may hide a small arc, but there is no detail inside a fully blocked corner. Fix the physical setup before the next frame.

When a filter is the problem

Wide lenses see the filter ring at a steeper angle. Use one correctly sized filter instead of a stack, and check the widest focal length before a paid shoot. If the effect appears only with a polarizer or ND filter, compare the filter thickness and mounting method in the polarizing filter guide or ND filter guide.

Why are the corners black only at the widest zoom setting?

The wider angle may be seeing the edge of a hood, filter ring, or adapter. Remove every front accessory and test again at the same focal length. If the edge becomes a soft shadow instead of a hard arc, the remaining falloff is probably optical vignetting.

Does stopping down fix vignetting?

It often reduces gradual optical vignetting, but it will not remove a hood, filter ring, or undersized image circle from the frame. Compare the same scene wide open and two stops down to separate those causes.

Can Lightroom recover black corners?

Lightroom can brighten gradual lens falloff with a profile or manual correction. It cannot recover image detail where a physical obstruction made the corner fully black.
