The band is not a shadow from the lens and it is rarely a broken flash. It is usually the shutter curtain appearing in the exposure because the flash fired while only part of the sensor was uncovered.
What the black band tells you
At ordinary shutter speeds, the first curtain opens fully, the flash fires, and the second curtain closes. At faster speeds, the second curtain starts moving before the first one has finished. The sensor is exposed through a traveling slit. A normal flash burst is too brief to light the whole slit, so one curtain blocks part of the frame.
The band can appear at the top or bottom depending on camera orientation and shutter design. What matters is its shape: a hard, straight edge that crosses most or all of the frame.

Fix it in five checks
1. Lower the shutter speed
Set the camera to manual exposure and start at 1/160 second. Leave the flash power, aperture, and ISO alone for the test. If the frame becomes evenly lit, raise the shutter one step at a time until the band returns. The last clean speed is the practical limit for that camera, flash, and trigger combination.
Many cameras sync around 1/200 or 1/250 second, but the exact limit belongs to the camera manual. Do not assume the number from another model.
2. Use the mechanical shutter
Silent and fully electronic shutter modes often do not work with conventional flash. Electronic first-curtain shutter can work on many cameras, but some combinations produce uneven exposure at fast speeds. For a clean diagnosis, switch to the full mechanical shutter first.
3. Check high-speed sync
High-speed sync, often labeled HSS or FP, makes the flash pulse while the slit travels across the sensor. Canon's EOS R50 flash documentation explains that HSS allows shutter speeds above the camera's normal maximum sync speed. Both the flash and the trigger must support the mode.
HSS costs flash power and range. If the subject is stationary, lowering the shutter and controlling ambient light is often the simpler answer.
4. Remove the radio trigger from the test
Put the flash directly on the camera if that is safe for the equipment. A clean frame on-camera and a band with the trigger points to trigger timing, firmware, or mode compatibility. Check that the transmitter and receiver show the same HSS state and channel.
5. Back away from the edge
Even a nominally supported sync speed can show a faint edge with third-party triggers or older flashes. Drop from 1/250 to 1/200, or from 1/200 to 1/160. Sony's high-speed sync guide also notes that very fast HSS shutter speeds can produce streaking, which is another reason to reduce the speed during diagnosis.
Keep the ambient exposure under control
Lowering shutter speed brightens the ambient part of the photo but does not make a normal flash burst brighter. If the room becomes too bright at the clean sync speed, lower ISO, close the aperture, reduce the room light, or use an ND filter. Common mistakes
The first mistake is raising flash power. More power does not move the curtain out of the frame. The second is enabling HSS on the flash but not the trigger, or the reverse. The third is leaving silent shutter enabled. The fourth is diagnosing a rounded lens-hood shadow as a sync problem.
If the black area changes with shutter speed and keeps a straight edge, solve timing first. If it stays in the same corners at every speed, check flash coverage and the lens hood instead.

Why is half of my photo black when I use flash?
The shutter was probably faster than the camera's normal flash sync speed, so a shutter curtain blocked part of the sensor when the flash fired. Try the mechanical shutter at 1/160 second. If that fixes it, stay below the sync limit or use compatible high-speed sync.
Can a broken flash cause a black bar?
